A Christmas Gift Marketing Lesson
As the weekend draws to a close, I hope everyone had a wonderful time celebrating with their families. I was sitting around with friends earlier today and we were all discussing the various things that had been given to us from family and friends. That conversation got me thinking, I was very happy and grateful of everything I got, but obviously each thing had its own sense of importance or meaning.
There was one gift which, to me stuck out like a nasty sore thumb.
Gift Cards.
Unfortunately, these electronic plastic cards-however convenient, are becoming a common option in the gift giving world. They are everywhere, nearly every national brand offers a card and they make them very easy to buy with Gift Card sections in nearly every convenience store in America.
My problem with the gift cards is the personal thought, or lack-thereof which is required when it comes to gifting these at the holiday time. To me, the small plastic snow scraper that one of my friends got me for an under $5 gift exchange was much more enjoyable to receive than the Visa gift card another had purchased for me (monetary value = ~$2.99 vs $25).

What if companies could take the gift-giving thought of a real gift, and apply that same personal attention to their marketing message? Facebook and Twitter as well as the rest of the social media movement has started this push towards a more personal communication medium for businesses, but even they are not perfect.
